Obedience is Action: How the Obedience of Abraham Displayed God’s Faithfulness

15 And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16 and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” 19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba.

Genesis 22:15-19

This past week my wife and I had the opportunity to take a family vacation with our 3 small children to Destin, FL.  In case you have never been to Destin they have some of the most beautiful beaches on earth.

One evening as we where taking pictures on the beach a family friend made reference to Gen. 22 and the familiar passage where Abraham offers his son to the Lord through sacrifice.  In Genesis 22:17 The Lord said, “I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the starts of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore.”

As I considered this passage I couldn’t help but notice the overwhelming amount of sand where I was standing.  From horizon to the East and scanning back to the west I was overwhelmed by the vastness of sand!  And God said that Abraham’s offspring would be as the sand on the seashore.  What an overwhelming thought!  But there is more to this passage.  God’s blessing was revealed out of a crisis of belief through the sacrifice of Isaac.  Thankfully, the Lord stayed Abraham’s hand and Isaac was saved but Abraham’s heart was ready to follow the Lord.  He was willing to be obedient at all cost.

Obedience to the Lord and His word is directly tied to action.  Obedience to the Lord requires us to move toward doing what God has asked.  Abraham exercised his obedience to the Lord in through his willingness to offer his son as a sacrifice.  Unthinkable!  Unimaginable but Abraham was willing to go to great lengths to obey the Lord.

As a result of Abraham’s obedience the Lord stated that his offspring would be as  great as the sand on the seashore.  Abraham’s blessing was directly tied to his obedience.  Abraham didn’t force God’s hand or earn salvation but he was willing to take great risk to be obedient even if it did not make earthly sense.

In closing, what has God asked you to do?  What step of obedience do you need to take in willing response to the Lord?  Obedience is tied to action.  Just look at the faithfulness of the Lord and to the sand upon the seashore.
