Keys to a Spirit-Filled Life

Take a moment and think back through your life. What is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen? Out of all the wonders that God created I believe the most beautiful is one of His children “walking in the Spirit.” When God’s crowning creation live and acts the way he was created to live, men are blessed and God is glorified. As a matter of fact we are commanded to walk in the Spirit as well as commanded to be filled with the Spirit. What is the key to the Spirit filled life? How and when are we filled with the Spirit? In John 3.3 Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Unless one is born of the Spirit he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus was a religious man but evidently not a Spirit filled man for if he had been, Jesus would never have told him he must be born again.

The Spirit filled life begins with a Spiritual birth. There is a definite time and place. At the moment you surrender your life to the Lord, repent of sin, and confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior, God supernaturally indwells you…with Himself. God through the person of the Holy Spirit dwells within you. That in itself is an overwhelming thought. Think about it….. the Creator of the Universe dwelling within His creation. However, there is a distinction to be made between the indwelling of the Spirit and the filling of the Spirit. The indwelling of the Spirit happens once, at your Spiritual birth. The filling of the Spirit is to be a continual moment by moment action according to Ephesians 5.18 which states, “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” This verse indicates it is God that does the filling, but we allow Him to fill us. This speaks of our continual surrender to God’s authority and claim over our lives. For we have been purchased not with corruptible things… but the precious blood of Christ. (I Peter 1.19)

What are the keys to being filled with the Spirit? It is the Supernatural birth and the continual surrender of our will to God’s will and God’s word.
